Elder Rock Out!

ELDER ROCK OUT (Drums)

Elder Rock Out is designed specifically for parents and RBL community members who wonder aloud, “Why the hell should the kids have all the fun?” In Elder Rock Out (Drums), the Head Donkey, who also just happen to be an elder, will teach you how to play. These small group classes are based on our tried and true RBL methods of melding our minds with the minds of others. We swear it doesn’t hurt. We’ll have structured lessons, we’ll leave room to improvise and to accommodate the specific requests of each class. Like everything else at RBL, Elder Rock Out is meant to focus on the fun of learning and creating with others. This class is for anyone who has ever wanted to learn an instrument. It’s not for shredders, especially those who already play in bands, and it’s definitely not for jerks.

Kind Words About ERO
ERO is the best part of my week. I learn so much and improve, and while I have a lot to learn, the journey is always positive, upbeat, and funny. It's a fantastic community of people and Brian is hilarious and a true pedagogical genius.— Hadar A.
Saying ERO is a drum class for parents is akin to saying RBL is “a music school for kids”. If you have ever been smart enough to hand your kid(s) to these guys, you know how silly that sounds.

Yes, we actually learn to play songs. I trepidatiously came to my first session with absolutely no previous musical training, and am always impressed at how Brian can teach to folks with so much range of musical skill at a time, keeping us all on our toes and in stitches.

The thing I love most about Thursday nights, however, is the rad community of folks that have made this a regular practice. It’s like an areligious weekly church service for those of us who otherwise would have no place to make joyful noise, in a supportive and hilarious community of fellow weirdo parents. Personally, I never liked church, but if I could I would attend ERO every day. — Carolyn B.

Lord knows, I have taken a lot of arts classes in my adult life. Mostly, I have come to these in hopes of honing skills, learning new techniques, and getting better at some cool thing in a way that might make me (and my million friends, but mostly me) feel like I still might have undiscovered talents, advanced age be damned.

This drum class is not about that. I mean, yes, I *have* learned my way around a kit, gained confidence and improved a ton as a drummer. It has been mind-opening and body-rewiring and more fun than anything called a ‘class’ has a right to be. Not to mention that the songs we work on are inspiring in themselves and have expanded my musical knowledge and tastes. But mainly, when I am at RBL it just doesn’t matter that much what skills I am building to enhance and enrich my future. Drumming, with this amazing group of classmates, great gear, and a kind and hilarious teacher with a genius for making rhythms clear to anyone at any level, just feels so damn good. By the end of each class I may be bone tired, I may feel the weight of all the chops I still want to develop, but I’m reliably blissed out, loving music, loving people, and really who doesn’t need a once-a-week appointment with that? — Andrea M

What might be a bit newer than the reputation as San Francisco’s best program for kids is that with Elder Rock Out it also hosts San Francisco’s best place for adults. Well… at least if you want to learn how to play the drums from a ridiculously talented teacher and hard working donkey in an environment that will meet any student at their skill level and build on that. All that with a group of people you wish you would have started a band with in college. You might laugh so hard you cry, you might even just cry but you will definitely work hard at a drum kit in great company.

RBL is an integral place for my sweet weird family and I want to end this review with my child’s words: I am never not ok at RBL! ...In a world that's all too often not ok, that is a lot of comfort. —Jenny K.
